The background
Former evangelist of equations and eternal truths — yes, a math teacher. Now a devoted practitioner of software engineering: same job, honestly. You take an idea and explain it so clearly that even a computer understands it.
J. Eli Johnson · Senior Software Engineer · Eagle Mountain, UT
I spent years teaching high-school math — fielding every possible variant of “when will we ever use this?” Then I went and used all of it. Seven-plus years now as a senior front-end engineer shipping e-commerce, Web3, and SaaS platforms, and these days I run an AI-accelerated dev studio from the foot of the Wasatch.
§ 1 · Given
(i)
Former evangelist of equations and eternal truths — yes, a math teacher. Now a devoted practitioner of software engineering: same job, honestly. You take an idea and explain it so clearly that even a computer understands it.
(ii)
Husband, dad of two, and staff to a dog named Bert. Most of my off-hours go to teaching my kids to be curious — to notice the infinite beauty all around them and ponder the nature of things.
(iii)
The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know. Only a fool believes he knows everything — so I stay curious, stay introspective, and keep the learning loop running.
§ 2 · Proof of work
2025 — present
AI-accelerated dev studio. Current flagship engagement: SMT Studio, a ground-up rebuild of a multi-tenant benefits & campaign portal for an enterprise media client — plus SEO rescues and dashboards for local businesses.
2022 — 2025
Led front-end architecture for a white-label Web3 e-commerce template used by 10+ brands. Shipped the NFT utility-activation UI that drove $100k+ in new revenue; Webiny CMS + Next.js ISR pipeline cut page loads 20%. Mentored junior devs.
2021 — 2022
Built a headless React/TypeScript PWA on Magento 2 + Gatsby for a $10M/mo brand. Checkout time down 50%+, cart abandonment down 30%, $250k processed on the beta launch weekend.
2019 — 2021
Single-handedly built a React Native app with FLIR thermal-camera integration that cut oil-tank measurement time 80% — and kept workers off the tanks entirely.
2018 — 2019
Real-time asset-tracking maps with Google Maps, GeoJSON, RabbitMQ, ElasticSearch, and Kubernetes. The career change, proven in production.
